How to Measure Your Kitchen for Cabinets

Measuring your kitchen accurately is crucial to ensure that your new cabinets fit perfectly. Follow these simple steps to gather all the necessary measurements for cabinets.

What You'll Need

  • A tape measure (preferably 25 feet long)

  • A pencil and paper to jot down measurements

Step 1: Measure the Walls

  • Length of each wall: Start by measuring the length of each wall in your kitchen from corner to corner. Measure at several points to ensure you're getting the correct length, especially if the walls aren't straight
  • Height of the walls: Measure the height from the floor to the ceiling at multiple points along each wall to confirm the overall height.

Step 2: Measure Door and Window Openings

  • Width and height of doors: Measure the width and heights of any doors in your kitchen.
  • Window dimensions: Measure the width and height of each window. Don't forget to note the distance from the floor to the bottom of the window and from the ceiling to the top of the window.

Step 3: Measure Existing Cabinets (if applicable)

  • Height, Width, and Depth: If you're replacing existing cabinets, measure the height, width, and depth of each cabinets. This will give you a good idea of the space you're working with and ensure your new cabinets fit perfectly.

Step 4: Measure Existing Cabinets (if applicable)

  • Stove, sink, and fridge locations: Measure the width, depth, and height of any built-in appliances like your stove, sink, and refrigerator. Be sure to leave enough space for proper installation
  • Clearance space: Make sure to account for any necessary clearance around appliances (e.g., for opening a dishwasher or oven)
